COMMUNITY MEETS WITH FAA OFFICIAL

At   the   January   25,   2018   Special   Meeting   of   the   Lake   Arrowhead Municipal    Advisory    Council,    FAA    Regional    Administrator,    Western Pacific    Region,    Dennis    Roberts    addressed    the    MAC    and    the    Lake Arrowhead   community   regarding   the   FAA’s   rerouting   of   aircraft   over Lake    Arrowhead.    A    Town    Hall    style    meeting    was    orchestrated    by Supervisor   Janice   Rutherford   with   the   assistance   of   other   state   and federal officials. A    standing    room    only    crowd    heard    first    from    Mark    Thorpe, Ontario   International   Airport   Authority   CEO   with   a   short   explanation of   the   growing   needs   of   ONT.   That   was   followed   by   a   presentation   by Mr.   Roberts   on   the   reasoning   for   moving   the   flight   path   into   Ontario Airport   directly   over   Lake   Arrowhead.   It   was   explained   that   the   FAA   is now    using    satellite    guidance    technology    and    in    combination    with newer   style   aircraft,   had   no   choice   other   than   to   reposition   aircraft   in   a path    directly    over    Lake    Arrowhead.    It    was    clear    from    the    crowd’s reaction   to   Mr.   Roberts’s   presentation   that   they   were   not   buying   into the    FAA’s    reasoning    for    the    move.    Questions    submitted    by    the audience    were    read    by    Supervisor    Janice    Rutherford    along    with questions     coming     directly     from     the     members     of     the     Municipal Advisory   Council.   In   response   to   community   questions,   Mr.   Roberts made   it   clear   that   the   FAA   is   not   going   back   to   the   old   flight   path   for safety    reasons.    He    went    on    to    give    a    possible    solution    to    the complaints   by   Lake   Arrowhead   residents   by   suggesting   a   “curfew”   for night    flights    between    11pm    and    7am.    During    those    hours,    flights would   be   redirected   to   a   new   flight   path   not   over   the   lake.   Residents vocally    rejected    that    offer    with    a    loud    roar    of    boos    and    verbal comments.   MAC   member   Scott   Rindenow   asked   Mr.   Roberts   directly, “is   it   going   to   take   the   residents   of   Lake   Arrowhead   suing   the   FAA   like other   communities   have   to   get   the   flight   path   moved   away   from   Lake Arrowhead,   or   are   you   simply   going   to   do   the   right   thing   on   your   own and   relocate   the   current   flight   path?”   At   that   point   the   audience   stood and   cheered   in   support.   Mr.   Roberts   responded   by   rehashing   much   of what   he   already   stated   in   his   presentation.   Quiet   Skies   group   founding member   David   Caine   presented   Mr.   Roberts   with   over   4,000   signed petitions   collected   in   protest   of   the   new   flight   path.   The   next   step   for Lake   Arrowhead   is   with   Supervisor   Rutherford   who   will   be   meeting with   the   FAA   in   Washington   DC   in   March.   The   Lake   Arrowhead   MAC will    continue    to    monitor    and    report    on    this    highly    important    local issue.
